Australia Working Holiday Visas - Class 417 & 462

Between 19 January 2022 and 19 April 2022, Working Holiday Maker (WHM) (subclasses 417 and 462) visa holders who arrive in Australia can apply for a refund of the visa application charge (VAC). From 5 March 2022, eligible current and former WHMs in Australia can apply for a WHM visa with nil VAC. For more information, see Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program - Latest news.

Basic Eligibility​

  • Must be 18 to 30 years old (or 35 years old for some countries)
  • Must have a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction
  • Must not be accompanied by dependent children

Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417)
For young adults who want an extended holiday and to work here to fund it.

First Working Holiday visa

This visa lets people 18 to 30 years old (or 35 years old for some countries) have their first extended holiday in Australia and work here to help fund their trip.
  • You must have a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction
  • You can work while you are here
  • You can apply for a second Working Holiday visa if you meet certain eligibility criteria

Stay: 12 months
Cost: AUD510

Processing Time
  • 25% of applications: Less than 1 Day
  • 50% of applications: Less than 1 Day
  • 75% of applications: 17 Days
  • 90% of applications: 4 Months
For Visitors and Working Holiday Makers the processing time is calculated differently depending on when you applied. If you applied before the border reopened, then the processing time is calculated from the date you became eligible to travel. If you applied after the border reopened, then the processing time is calculated from the date you applied.



Second Working Holiday visa

This visa lets people 18 to 30 years old (or 35 years old for some countries) who currently hold, or who have held, a Working Holiday visa, have a second working holiday in Australia.
  • You must have a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction
  • You can do any kind of work while you are here
  • You must have completed 3 months of specified subclass 417 work
  • If you are in Australia, you must hold a substantive visa or your last substantive visa expired less than 28 days ago
  • You can apply for a third Working Holiday visa if you meet certain eligibility criteria
Stay: 12 months
Cost: AUD510

Processing Time
  • 25% of applications: Less than 1 Day
  • 50% of applications: Less than 1 Day
  • 75% of applications: 17 Days
  • 90% of applications: 4 Months
Applications which had been on-hand while Australia’s borders were closed are now being finalised. As these older applications are being finalised, published processing times have increased. Applications lodged recently are being finalised quickly. 75 per cent of applications lodged since 1 November 2021 that were finalised before 28 February 2022 were finalised in 17 days.



Third Working Holiday visa

This visa lets people 18 to 30 years old (or 35 years old for some countries) who currently hold, or who have held, a second Working Holiday visa, have a third working holiday in Australia.
  • You must have a passport from an eligible country/jurisdiction
  • You can do any kind of work while you are here
  • You must have completed 6 months of specified subclass 417 work
  • If you are in Australia, you must hold a substantive visa or your last substantive visa expired less than 28 days ago
Stay: 12 months
Cost: AUD510
Processing Time
